Reverse Sheepadoodles: All You Need to Know!

Sheepadoodles are a fun, designer hybrid of an Old English Sheepdog and a Standard Poodle. When we say “reverse,” we mean the pups take after their Sheepdog parent a bit more than their Poodle parent in appearance—around 75% Old English Sheepdog and 25% Poodle.

Tuxedo Coats and Color Transition: Reverse Sheepadoodles are often born with striking tuxedo black-and-white coats, which gradually transition into beautiful shades of silver, silver-blue, or silver-grey as they grow. Watching their coat colors change over time is part of their unique charm!

Shedding: Reverse Sheepadoodles are generally low-shedding due to their Poodle ancestry, but the amount of shedding can vary based on their coat:

  • Poodle-like coat: Minimal shedding, great for allergy sufferers.

  • Sheepdog-like coat: Slightly more hair let off, but still a minimal amount ideal for a clean and doghair-free home.

Regular grooming helps manage any shedding and keeps their coat healthy.

What Makes Reverse Sheepadoodles So Special?

  • Coat and Size: Reverse Sheepadoodles usually have a straight coat similar to the Old English Sheepdog. They’re often large, weighing between 60 and 85 lbs. Their coat starts with black-and-white tuxedo markings and often transitions to silver tones as they grow.

  • Friendly & Intelligent: They’re social, friendly, and highly trainable, making them great for families.

  • Protective: With more Sheepdog influence, they tend to be protective and loyal, making them excellent companions.

  • Energy Level: Reverse Sheepadoodles have a wonderfully balanced energy level. They love outdoor activities and enjoy regular exercise to stay happy, yet have an “off-switch” and can enjoy relaxing and napping.

  • Grooming Needs: Due to their dense coat, these dogs require regular brushing to prevent matting and trims to keep their fur looking neat.

Health & LifespanReverse Sheepadoodles benefit from hybrid vigor, which reduces the risk of some breed-specific health issues. With good care, they have a lifespan of 12–15 years.

Training Tips for Reverse Standard Sheepadoodles

Training these pups is a rewarding experience due to their intelligence and eagerness to please. Here are some key training tips:

  • Start Early & Be Consistent: Begin training as soon as they come home and maintain consistency with commands and routines. This will prevent confusion and help your pup learn faster.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Use treats, toys, and praise to reward good behavior. Avoid harsh punishments, as they can be sensitive and respond better to positive methods.

  • Socialization: Early socialization with people, other pets, and new environments is key to raising a confident, well-adjusted dog. Take them to parks or puppy classes to get them used to different experiences.

  • Impulse Control & Mental Stimulation: Teach commands like “wait” and “leave it” to help them manage their excitement. Incorporate puzzle toys and interactive games to keep their sharp minds engaged.

  • Exercise & Leash Training: Daily exercise, with at least 30 minutes of physical activity, is crucial. Start leash training early to prevent pulling, and use treats to encourage walking by your side.

  • Crate Training & Herding Instincts: Crate training provides a safe space and helps with housebreaking. If your Sheepadoodle has herding tendencies, redirect that energy with structured games like fetch or agility training.

If you need further assistance or advice, consider enrolling in obedience classes. Remember to be patient throughout the process.

Why Choose a Reverse Standard Sheepadoodle? These pups are perfect for those who love the look of an Old English Sheepdog but want the added intelligence, low-shedding coat, and playful nature of a Poodle.
